El Centro de la Amistad
El Centro de la Amistad is located in Pulaski and Floyd. These Hispanic centers provide:

  • Interpretation and Translation
Our bilingual Director of El Centro provides interpretation and translation free of charge to member of the Hispanic Community and provides the same to nonprofits and government agencies on a sliding scale.
  • Life skill support and referral
We provide general support for the Hispanic Community around issues of health, welfare, and civic activities. This includes help in filling out forms and legal documents, referral to appropriate agencies, and advocacy. Our goal is to have complete understanding by both community members and agency employees for fair and just interaction within the capacity of the agency.
  • English Language Literacy Classes
In partnership with Adult education Beans and Rice provides a variety of English Language Literacy Classes.
  • Support for Public Schools
Beans and Rice provides support for teachers in the New River Valley working with students and family members whose first language is not English. We have developed a simulation called ¿Entiendes? that helps participants experience life in a world in which they do not speak the language. Follow up workshops and language classes are provided.
  • ELL/Civics Project
In partnership with Floyd County Schools, Pulaski County Schools, Adult Education, and Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley, Beans and Rice provides ongoing programming to families of school children through adult literacy, family literacy, and civics education.
