Individual Development Account (IDA) programs are matched savings accounts similar to 401 (K) plans that provide financial literacy while helping low-to-moderate income persons buy their first home, pay for post-secondary education, or develop a small business. IDAs take a pro-active social service approach. When LMI persons develop economic assets, research demonstrates: 1) increased rates of first-time home-ownership, 2) increased enrollment in non-degree educational courses 3) increased financial literacy leading to higher personal savings rates, and 4) attainment of higher education leading to higher household income.
