Capacity Development

Capacity development programs strengthen the skills, competencies and abilities of disenfranchised people and communities so they can overcome the causes of their exclusion and suffering. Beans and Rice, Inc. develops capacities through community-based education programs that increase educational outcomes for children and adult family members.
Out-of-school-time academic enrichment programs operate 32 weeks during the school year and 4-8 weeks during the summer. These programs provide homework assistance, financial literacy education, academic enrichment and behavioral/social development for 350 of the most academically, economically, and behaviorally challenged students at Dublin, McHarg and Belle Heth Elementary Schools, Pulaski Middle School, and Pulaski County High School. The majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Parental engagement provides afterschool students and family members monthly academic enrichment events. Sample instructional activities include Homework 101, family math night, workforce development workshops, computer workshops, career readiness, developmental assets parenting, internet safety, and nutrition. The program improves academic achievement by increasing parental engagement.
