Partners
Beans and Rice,
Inc. has been a placement for service-learning students at Radford
University since 1997. Students are volunteer staff, site leaders,
or interns and come from a variety of programs at the university
such as sociology, recreation and leisure services, art education,
music therapy, education, and early childhood development.
Beans and Rice
is also a community partner with the recently federally funded PACES
program out of the School of Nursing. This project is being developed
and the specific programming is the early stages of development.
In fall 1999
we registered with the Service-Learning Center at Virginia
Tech. Five students in their leadership program and one student
with the Social Issues class have been placed in Beans and Rice
programs.
We also registered
with the Literacy Volunteers at Virginia Tech for a work- study
student to do a reading program.
We are registered
with the City of Radford Department of Social Services as placement
site for welfare to work recipients. To date no referrals have been
made.
We partnered
with the Radford Public Library in our summer reading program.
We coordinate
our work with the Office on Youth. We attend Youth Summit meetings,
provide contact for the City of Radford Office on Youth, and are
involved in their Youth Leadership Development Project.
Mountain Empire
Services provides us with transportation for field trips on a contractual
basis.
