El
Centro de la Amistad is located in Pulaski and Floyd. These Hispanic centers
provide:
- Interpretation
and Translation
Our bilingual Director of El Centro provides interpretation and translation
free of charge to member of the Hispanic Community and provides the
same to nonprofits and government agencies on a sliding scale.
- Life skill
support and referral
We provide general support for the Hispanic Community around issues
of health, welfare, and civic activities. This includes help in filling
out forms and legal documents, referral to appropriate agencies, and
advocacy. Our goal is to have complete understanding by both community
members and agency employees for fair and just interaction within the
capacity of the agency.
- English Language
Literacy Classes
In partnership with Adult education Beans and Rice provides a variety
of English Language Literacy Classes.
- Support for
Public Schools
Beans and Rice provides support for teachers in the New River Valley
working with students and family members whose first language is not
English. We have developed a simulation called ¿Entiendes? that
helps participants experience life in a world in which they do not speak
the language. Follow up workshops and language classes are provided.
- ELL/Civics
Project
In partnership with Floyd County Schools, Pulaski County Schools, Adult
Education, and Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley, Beans and
Rice provides ongoing programming to families of school children through
adult literacy, family literacy, and civics education.
