Service-Learning Program

The Service-Learning Program combines volunteer work with low-income children and 10-12 hours of in-service staff training. Although college students are the primary participants, the program is open to all volunteers who can make the required commitment. The program requires a 15-week commitment during one of two sessions: 1) September-December or 2) January-April. Participants choose one weekday (Monday-Thursday) and volunteer each week on that day between the hours of 8:30-11:30 am, 2:30-5:30 pm, or 3:30-6:30pm.

The in-service staff training includes the following 2-3 hour sessions:

  • Orientation
  • Discipline and Conflict Resolution
  • "Life in a State of Poverty" Simulation
  • White Privilege

Student volunteers fill the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Mentoring
  • Modeling appropriate behavior
  • Tutoring in order to raise academic aspirations
  • Mediation
  • Discipline
  • Activity planning and implementation
  • Program evaluation.
