To help with the Food Distribution program, we need a driver at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, either on a regular basis (one day a week) or on call as a substitute. The drivers will be picking up and delivering food donations.

Beans and Rice, Inc. relies heavily upon student-learning staff and community volunteers to staff many of its programs. Annually, we log over 4,000 hours of volunteer support. In addition, our former (and original) Executive Director served pro bono from 1997 to 2011 and has received many awards for this work and her collaborative approach.
Developing leadership capacity at all volunteer levels is a primary focus. Our volunteers are expected to go beyond passive participation and the completion of specific tasks. They serve as mentors, tutors, and teachers. All volunteers receive training and close supervision from both Beans and Rice staff and experienced volunteers.
Radford University faculty assign service-learning placement with us in their courses. These staff are placed in our after-school programs and serve about 40 hours per semester including three trainings. Classes that have placed students with us include education, mathematics, and sociology.
Students interested in a service-learning placement with us are invited to submit a service-learning application.
Interns are also placed in the after school program and tend to serve every day of the program (based on the hours they need) and take more of a leadership role. Our most frequent source of interns is the Radford University Social Work program.
Graduate programs at Radford University have also placed their students with us.These programs have included: Special Education, Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy, and Reading Specialist.
Several of our volunteers and interns have become staff through placement with us as year long AmeriCorps VISTAs or AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates. We had our first AmeriCorps placement in 1998-99. To learn more about AmeriCorps VISTA go to http://www.nationalservice.gov/
