Service-Learning
Program
The
Service-Learning Program combines volunteer work with low-income
children and 10-12 hours of in-service staff training. Although
college students are the primary participants, the program is open
to all volunteers who can make the required commitment. The program
requires a 15-week commitment during one of two sessions: 1) September-December
or 2) January-April. Participants choose one weekday (Monday-Thursday)
and volunteer each week on that day between the hours of 8:30-11:30
am, 2:30-5:30 pm, or 3:30-6:30pm.
The in-service
staff training includes the following 2-3 hour sessions:
- Orientation
- Discipline
and Conflict Resolution
- "Life
in a State of Poverty" Simulation
- White Privilege
Student volunteers
fill the following roles and responsibilities:
- Mentoring
- Modeling
appropriate behavior
- Tutoring
in order to raise academic aspirations
- Mediation
- Discipline
- Activity
planning and implementation
- Program
evaluation.
